Herring was a pioneer cattleman, oilman, and banker who bought 98,000 acres of the LS Ranch in 1907 and was one of the builders of the Amarillo Building in the same period that the Herring Hotel was constructed. The Herring Hotel was built in 1926 as a 14-story, 600-room hotel serving oil and cattleman coming to Amarillo on the railroad. The u-shaped design uses electric detail including Spanish Colonial Revival ornamentation. Modern for the day each room had a private bath. Located in the basement, the Old Tascosa Room features historic murals from famed regional artist, Harold Bugbee. The building later became offices for the federal government. It has been vacant since the 1960’s. Current owners are hopeful that it can have a new life as a hotel or downtown residence. Eligible for the National Register as one of the largest mid most prominent skyscrapers of the oil boom of the 1920s, mid for its associations with C. T. Herring.
