401 S Grant St 

This depot was built in 1910, following the long  awaited completion of the Santa Fe line into the  city in 1908. Construction of this depot led to the  abandonment of the old Union Depot and to the consequent  decline of the Bowery area. The architect,  C. Morse, was probably an employee of the Santa Fe  Railroad.

This building is a two-story Mission Revival railroad depot with stucco walls and red-tiled roofs. Its long, gable roofed main building has cross gabled elements that are asymmetrically and picturesquely placed across the street facade. The principal entrance from the street passes under a projecting porch on massive piers and through a large horseshoe arch into a high waiting room and from there out through an arcaded loggia to the loading platforms. The interior public space is not elaborate but is simple and appropriate to the character of the building. There is a large, metal Santa Fe sign on the roof. The depot is approached by a very wide red brick street.

Although other Santa Fe structures in Amarillo may better represent the enormous impact of  the railroad on the city's life and economy, this building is an excellent reminder of its ties to other parts of the United States. As the depot, of course it provided the physical link to travelers coming and going, but in its appearance it also provided a strong symbol of the Santa Fe railroad which employed the Mission Revival style in its depots throughout the southwest as a kind of trade mark. The building is eligible for the National Register both for its place in the history of the city and for its architectural quality.
