The Granada Theater was built in 1928 and became the major entertainment center in the Big Bend area. The building offers decades of history, dating back to 1928. The theatre was utilized over the years for screening movies and a setting for community events, such as the 1941 West Texas Jitterbug Championships and the 1943 Stars of Texas war bond drive. Over 2,500 gathered outside the Granada in June 1943 to catch a glimpse of Hollywood stars: Gene Autry, Chill Willis and Gayle Storm. The bond tour raised over 18 million dollars for the United States’ war efforts against the Axis powers. The citizens of the tri-county area utilized the facility, many on a weekly basis, to distract themselves from the plights of the Great Depression, a World War, the Korean Conflict and finally the Vietnam War. Many generations share fond memories of watching movies that transported them to faraway places and the adventures of such stars as: Hepburn and Bogart, Spencer Tracy, Cary Grant and a host of Western stars, such as John Wayne and Hop Along Cassidy. The current owner beautifully restored the buildings and operated them successfully as a dining, bar and entertainment venue since 2009.
