About This Property

The Bottling Works was founded in the early 1920s by Basil Matthew and his father, Walter Matthews. It was the original Alpine bottling plant. It had a loading dock on the north side, facing the depot. The plant was the hand bottling kind that had no electricity and the entire operation could be run with two workers. The Matthews ordered extract from larger companies and mix it with sugar and water. Matthews recorded in an oral history interview that this location was the first to make Dr. Pepper in West Texas.  Over the years, the building housed Big Bend Cleaners and several studios including Bob Bell's from 1996-2001. It is currently operated by the Sibley's as the Bottle House Bed and Breakfast.
