Lumberman W. C. Barnes, operator of the W. C. Barnes Lumber Yard at 706 E. Santa Rosa from 1895 to 1912,
 built this expertly crafted and substantial home for his family in 1893. The architectural detailing is perhaps 
some of the finest in the city from the late nineteenth century. Barnes later operated a furniture  store, then managed the Koontz Lumber Yard in Inez.
