About This Property

F. A. Piper, born in  Prussia in 1851, came to Uvalde in 1877 and  opened a mercantile store. The store’s motto 
was “F. A. Piper & Co. Dealers in Everything  You Want.” In 1906, Gus Birkner built this building for F. A. Piper  who moved his business here from the opera house. In 1926, Piper sold the business to  George Horner, his brother-in-law. Horner’s  not only bought and sold wool and mohair,  honey and pecans, they also sold hardware,  ready-to-wear clothes, groceries, insurance, and hardware. They ran a private bank and  had a wagon yard for their customers. Later  Horner’s was the Ford automobile dealer and  the Texaco gas consignee.
