In  1903, Joseph Smyth purchased the J. H.  Green hardware store and expanded the  business into a large department store called  J. G. Smyth & Company. Their slogan was  “Everything from a Needle to a Tractor.” The first building constructed was the one story  building in the middle. The second, two story  building was built in 1908. One or both of the  buildings was built by Gus Birkner. The two  story building has a basement, mezzanine and  two floors with a hand operated elevator for  carrying merchandise between them. While  the present courthouse was being built, the  county court met upstairs. Other businesses  located here include Carper’s and Lintz. The  area between the two buildings was an alley  until it was enclosed and used for businesses  like the Uvalde office of National Farm  Credit. The one story building has also been  used for White’s Auto and Lowe’s Furniture.  To the south was the area where Smyth’s  sold tractors and farm equipment. Moody  & Moore’s General Tire built a store here.
