Why Rio Grande City?

Welcome to Downtown Rio Grande City!

Over ten years ago, the Texas Historical Commission designated Rio Grande City as a Texas Main Street Community. We are one of two designated Main Street Programs in the Rio Grande Valley — a distinction we wear with great pride and one that brings meaningful recognition to our community.

Our program is dedicated to revitalizing the downtown historic district through the Four Point Approach™ established by the National Main Street Center. This framework guides us in building strong community partnerships, promoting downtown through vibrant Main Street events, preserving and maintaining the historical elements unique to Rio Grande City, and fostering economic development rooted in our community's rich historical legacy.

We warmly invite you to experience our history, genuine hospitality, and South Texas charm. Come explore the anchors of our Historic Downtown District:

  • Lopez-Tijerina Courtyard
  • Rio Grande City Public Library
  • Kelsey Bass Museum & Event Center
  • La Borde House
  • Grotto of Lourdes Replica

Join us for El Grito en el Kiosko, our spirited celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, gather with neighbors at Britton Avenue's Christmas Tree Lighting, or hop aboard the Bessie III Trolley Tour to discover downtown's back streets, hidden gems, and storied points of interest.
