Prominent Palestine Architect Theodore S. Maffitt designed the Denby Building in about 1935, and the building's longest association was with the Denby Furniture Store which remained through the 1950's. The Denby Building is classified as a 2-part commercial block, the most common type of commercial property in downtown Palestine and is one of the city's premier examples of this type dating from the 1930s. Although it lacks the exuberant ornamentation seen on most of the city's turn-of-the-century commercial properties, the building reflects a popular trend in commercial architecture of the 1930s which was characterized by simplicity in design and appearance. The stylistic restraint of the Denby Building distinguishes it as an outstanding local example of 1930s era commercial architecture. The facility is currently used as an event center and includes an adjacent commercial restaurant property at 205 W Crawford St which was built in 1948.
