Historic Name: Smokey Row

About This Property

This was a small commercial building built about 1890. Completely rehabilitated in 2016, this is the last building standing from the original block which was called Smokey Row along Houston Street. This was a distinct commercial area just southeast of the square largely lost to fire. The name derives from the smoke that would hang in the air from blacksmith shops which operated at the south end of the block. The physical area remains culturally significant and plans are underway for a public space to reinterpret Smokey Row.
