Mount Vernon is strategically located in rural northeast Texas. The county seat of Franklin County, the town is 100 miles from Dallas-Fort Worth and 80 miles to Texarkana on the historic Bankhead Highway. As a Texas Main Street City, Mount Vernon has committed to the preservation and development of its historic downtown offering the quintessential courthouse square experience. Beginning in late 2014 with the re-dedication of the 1912 neo-classical courthouse, Mount Vernon has experienced a significant amount of reinvestment including the major rehabilitation of four important historic buildings on the square and an influx of dining and entertainment options anyone would be surprised to find in a small town. Mount Vernon Main Street has worked to develop the city's Bankhead Highway historic resources as well as other food and wine related tourism opportunities, and has brought more than 20,000 visitors to the Main Street District in the past two years.
It's an exciting time to be in Mount Vernon, although downtown is running out of space! Assistance and incentives are available to business and building owners including architectural renderings, paint, awnings, and sign grants.
