Robert Kleberg invited John B. Ragland to come to Kingsville and establish the John B. Ragland Mercantile Company in 1904.  The first Ragland building was a wood frame building over on 5th Street.  In 1908 Ragland sold the business and the lots at the corner of East Kleberg and Sixth Street to a newly-formed corporation.  This would be the John B. Ragland Mercantile Company.  The building is the crown jewel of Kingsville’s Historic Downtown.  It was the best known department store in south Texas for decades.  It closed in 1979.  The King Ranch restored the building which is now home to famous King Ranch Saddle Shop.
