The building and the lot have an interesting history to tell.  In 1915 the Gulf Coast Record had moved to this location from the Toner Building on Kleberg Avenue.  The Water and Light offices were on the corner.  By 1922 a bakery would be in this location and a meat market next to the Gulf Coast Record, renames Kingsville Record.  A fire in the mid-1920s would gut that group of buildings taking with it a large section of the archived newspapers leaving a gap in the Kingsville Records history of our community.  The building was rebuilt and became home to Allen’s Furniture for decades.  A fire prevention sprinkler system similar to what was in use by the Raglands Mercantile would serve as a protection from future fire destruction.  A fire wall separated Allen’s Furniture from other shops at that location.  The furniture store was very spacious with a raised deck floor going around the exterior walls where furniture was displayed.  The interior of the building was on ground level with more display area. Allen’s closed in 2004 and was bought by the King Ranch Saddle Shop.
