The old Salt City Company is the oldest commercial structure in the Main Street District.  Built in 1889 by J. E. Persons, Sr. The impressive two-story structure includes a basement and a large loft attic that essentially offers four floors for use.  The only elevator in Grand Saline is located in this building and was installed by Otis Elevators at the time of its construction.  The Salt City Company was a general store which offered everything from baby bottles to undertaking.  
The floor clerks would wait on customers, write up their bills and send the customer's money, merchandise and tickets up to the mezzanine in a small basket on a pulley system.  Upstairs clerks would ring the sale up on the cash register, wrap the merchandise in brown paper and tie it with white string and send it and the change back to the first floor in the basket.  Stores of this era ran in-house charge accounts and sometimes the customers only had to sign their name to the ticket which was then recorded in a large ledger of accounts to be paid at the end of each month. 
The lumber yard operations was in business until the 1970's.  From the 1960's, Galloway Darby operated a traditional dry goods store in the building until his retirement in 2000.  Mr. Darby donated the building to the City of Grand Saline to serve as location for the Grand Saline Salt Museum which is now under development and currently houses the Main Street Program office in the one-story section. 
Kirby Bailey Appliances was in 103 N Main for a short time.
In 1990 Maciel insurance, Sue's Beauty Salon, Darby's Department Store & Phyllis' Fashions & Gifts and Berry's Food Store were located here. 
In 2006, this location was used for an eBay business, Package2you.com, owned by Denonda Adams.
An additional note of interest - one of the finials on top of the building was hit by lightning in 1960's at which time the roof edge was leveled.
