About This Property

This building was constructed by the Elgin Improvements Company and is believed to have been the second brick building in downtown Elgin. It first housed a general store and drug store on the first floor, and an opera house upstairs. In 1910 it housed a jewelry store, a barber shop, and a bakery. The cafe opened in 1910. Recently completely rehabilitated, the first floor continues to operate as a full service restaurant.
