Cotulla is in the heart of South Texas Brush Country and is known for its rich ranching heritage. The city experiences significant economic activity as a result of the Eagle Ford Shale gas production and oil reserves. As a Texas Main Street City, Cotulla has focused its resources on the downtown recently completing a beautification project that redesigned streetscapes and installed native landscaping along Front and Center Streets. An impressive large mural by Laredo artist Gilberto Rocha was unveiled in 2016 and plans are underway to restore the circa 1925 Mission Revival Cotulla Motor Co. as City Hall. While downtown Cotulla may be small, it is historically significant. The 1931 LaSalle County Courthouse has been magnificently restored as part of the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program and the downtown district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013, opening up the opportunity for many of the 50 or so buildings in the district to be eligible for state and federal historic tax incentives.
