About This Property

Thomas Rusk Keahey was a Great Grandson of Thomas Jefferson Rusk, the noted statesman of the Republic of Texas and early Texas Statehood. He practiced dentistry in Canton for 50 years. He graduated from Baylor Dental School in 1929 and moved to Canton in 1930 and purchased the dental practice of Dr. John Kearby Bateman. Dr. Keahey had his dental office on the second floor of the First National Bank until May of 1946, when he moved his dental practice to the new brick building at 222 W Dallas Street. Besides his dental practice, he was involved in the community with the Masons, helped organize and was the first president of the Van Zandt County Fair, President of the Canton School Board, "Man of the Year" for the Canton Chamber of Commerce 1967, and outstanding Citizen of Van Zandt County, 1983. Keahey died in 1987.
