J. P. Valentine built the first brick building on the south side of the square. This building was completed in November of 1918; and contained two rooms, large show windows in front, and a private lighting system. The building was large enough to house two businesses. The Valentine's, J. P and James E. were prominent in the Canton business community for 30 years. J. P. Valentine was born in White County Arkansas and arrived in Canton in 1897, and opened a mercchantile business. Valentine's businesses were housed in frame buildings until moving into the new brick building in 1918. J. P. operated under the name of Valentine, Inc., selling groceries and general merchandise. In March of 1927, the business failed and C. H. Hall from Athens purchased the bankrupt stock. C. H. Hall's Cash Store followed Valentine at this location. In addition to selling the bankrupt stock of Valentines, he also carried groceries and dry-goods. Halls store operated into the 1930s, then other businesses were at that location. Glenn Scott, operating as Piggly Wiggly opened a grocery store in one side of the building, in April of 1948. The other side of the building was occupied by Canton Department Store. In 1950, John C. Winkler with Grady Selton acquired the business and sold dry goods, clothing and shoes for men and women. Winkler purchased his partners interest and changed the name to Winkler's Department Store. This business failed in 1957 and Piggly Wiggly occupied the entire building. In 1966, Glenn Scott moved Piggly Wiggly to a location on Highway 19. In 1967, J. B. White, a chain department store with headquarters in Jacksonville, opened a store at this location and operated it for over 20 years.
