The building was contructed in 1905 to house Canton's first bank. The brick for the building was imported Saint Louis pressed brick instead of locally manufactured brick that all of the other buildings were constructed witih. The bank was a State Bank organized by Otho S. Houston, a relative of the famous Sam Houston. The first bank cashier was Harry Houston, a Grandson of th famous Texas hero. In 1907, a group of local citizens purchsed the bank from the Houstons and formed the First National Bank of Canton. In 1915, the stockholders of the bank built a new bank building on the West side of the Caton Square and moved the bank to that location. The current occupant, Van Zandt County Abstract Company, has been housed in the building for over eighty years.
