Jacob J. Utts served in the Union Army during the Civil War and moved to Canton about 1876. In 1879, he opeed a grocery store on the corner in Canton where it remained for 40 years. The utts were one of the more prominent families in Caton and Van Zandt County for over 50 years. Jacob Utts ws a substantial land owner and farmer. He was the Canton Postmaster for 12 years. In 1919, he tore down the old frame building and constructed a new brick building. Utts died August 1, 1920, shortly after the building was completed. The first occupant and only occupant until 1977 was the Palace Drug Store. The first known owner of the Palace Drug Store was Dr. C. P. Smith. He moved the drug store to one of the Tull buildings on the West Side of the square in 1910. W. F. Kellam was the owner for a short time, and then O. N. Cole acquired the store. In March of 1920, the Palace Drug Store moved to the new Utts building. Cole purchased all new fixtures and equipment when the business was moved to the Utts building and some of the fixtures remained in the store as long as it was in operation. O. N. Cole's business failed in January of 1921. In February of 1921, J. T. Beard purchased the merchandise and fixtures from the bankruptcy trustee at a public sale. The Utts remained owners of the building and leased it to J. T. Beard. The Beards operated the business until 1977, when the owners of the Canton Herald purchased the building and moved the newspaper from the north side of the square to this locaiton. This building has had only two occupants since it was built in 1920; The Palace Drugstore 1920-1977 and The Canton Herald Newspaper since 1977.
