About This Property

The Nathan Building is an example of commercial architecture built by successful turn-of-the-century Jewish businessmen and later "modernized" as architectural trends evolved.  Originally a two-story structure, the building is a neoclassical structure with Italianate details. Notice the building is trapezoidal, this is because of a once-existing railroad right-of-way. The Nathan Building originally housed Nathan’s, Beaumont’s first department store. Jake Nathan came to Beaumont in 1896 and rented a building to sell discount dry goods for cash only. This new concept was very successful. Just before the Great Depression, Mr. Nathan sold the store to Montgomery Ward.  The building is a contributing building in National Register Beaumont Commercial Historic District and was recently purchased by a local investor with plans to restore the building.

·      Four-story brick two-part commercial block

·      First story brick veneer facade with aluminum frame and plate glass display windows, recessed central doors, and cast-iron columns 

·      Windows are all boarded up or plastered over
