Local Landmark

The T.A. Hasler Building was built in the late 1870s. When Hasler arrived on the shores of the United States from Switzerland in 1861 as a penniless teenager, he probably could not have imagined that he would settle in the small town of Bastrop and build a prosperous business empire there. The land and buildings at the corner of Main and Chestnut Streets, still called Hasler's Corner, became the centerpiece of his enterprises and included a saloon, funeral home, dry goods store, grocery store, warehouse and the town's general store. His business enterprises flourished until his death in 1909, at which time his businesses were divided among his children.
