Originally built as a Kress store, this building’s first purpose was similar in business to many of the dollar stores of today. The company wanted its building to be very fancy with gold-lettered signs and sophisticated architecture. Built in 1932, at a cost of $100,000, the project considered a fortune at the time. It shows how national businesses brought the latest styles of architecture to all parts of the country. The Kress store was closed in the mid-1970’s. Designed by architect R.R. Rowe, this particular store has been featured in architectural design books detailing the Pueblo Deco movement, an era at which combined Art Deco motifs with Southwestern themes. It now houses Center City Furniture store. Center City of Amarillo worked with the store owner to restore a neon sign inspired by the original Kress sign.
