Across the lawn of the Courthouse Square, and to the North is the Marvin Jones Federal Courthouse. In 1937, this building was constructed as the main Post Office for Amarillo. The lobby features murals by Julias Woeltz of New Orleans, in the style of WPA murals, showing distinctive regional culture. This building now houses the federal courthouse and is famous in media history as the sight of Oprah Winfrey’s trial when was sued by the Texas cattleman for her comments about beef. During the trial the courthouse lawn was full if local reporters and national media tents for ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN News.
