Built by W.M. Rice, it was designed by Amarillo architect Joseph Champ Berry, this two-story residence was constructed in 1914 for Kentucky native John Malcolm Shelton (1852-1923), a prominent Panhandle cattleman and businessman, owner of the Bravo Ranch (carved from the original XIT Ranch). The two-story brick Bungalow has a wrap-around porch on brick piers and is an example of homes built by wealthy ranchers in the early days of Amarillo. Built of brick, the home features detailing of the Prairie Style.  Following Shelton's death, the house was inherited by his daughter Martha, the wife of rancher Ted Houghton. Mr. Shelton's daughter, Martha, lived there for years before donating it to the Junior League of Amarillo in 1965.
